THE PASSING OF DEAN MORROW
It is with great sadness that we share with you the passing of Dean Morrow, a great SEHA coach and hockey supporter. Sadly, he lost his battle with brain cancer over the weekend.
Dean was a committed SEHA rep coach from 2014 when SEHA was created. Many senior and junior players from Briars will have been coached by Dean over the years as he coached many different teams at various levels due to his love of developing hockey players. He was a gentle and humble man and will be sadly missed.
There is a tribute page for Dean on the Mark Hughes Foundation, helping to raise money for brain cancer. If you would like to donate please Click Here.

CANTEEN UPDATE
A brilliant weekend at Cintra this past weekend. All those giving your time in the canteen are helping to build a fantastic reputation for Cintra across the clubs and teams that play and spectate there with great service and a welcoming vibe. This is evidenced by just how much stock we are getting through each weekend!
Firstly a big shout out to Hidde for getting his wonderful pies to Cintra on Friday when on Friday morning I realised I’d forgotten to order them. Phew!! Thanks to Chris Thuell for covering the full shift on Friday with wonderful help from the U13/15/17 parents. Thanks to the enthusiasm and eagerness of the Minkey parents for kicking off a busy Saturday morning backed up by the U11 Gold parents, as well as Juliette Triccas, Emily Shipton and Julie Prolov allowing the U11 Maroon parents a well deserved morning off! Thanks to the super effort of Men’s 1st, 2nd and 5th Grade for covering a big afternoon/evening! Thanks to those that jumped in and helped Wal on Sunday after Wal wasn’t feeling well following a short stint in hospital during the week prior. It’s fantastic to see people so willing to jump in a help out.
It’s going to be a particularly huge Saturday this weekend, kicking off with a Minkey Gala morning involving 18 x U7/U9 teams and now 2 x U11 matches that will pretty much run right into the start of Briars/Glebe PL3-PL1 and 2 x SL6 finals matches. For those teams on duty, please don’t be shy in letting your team manager know where you can help…we’re going to need you this weekend!
Below is the roster for this weekend. Next weekend is still TBC based on some finals matches needing to be confirmed.

CANTEEN UPDATE
After a scheduling oversight, last weekend kicked off with a busy Friday night. Thanks to the U13 parents for opening up and getting things started at short notice and to the injured Cindy Goodridge for covering the rest of the evening of Glebe home matches. The U11 Maroon parents then had a busy Saturday morning on BBQ and canteen well after their match time. The Sydney Uni Derby Day probably wasn’t as busy as we would have liked but the weather was great, the hockey was entertaining and the team efforts on the BBQ and in the canteen was a great reflection of the Briars spirit.
This weekend will be our busiest between now and the end of the season. For those teams on duty, please help out where you can to share the load.
A reminder for those on the opening or closing timeslots, the volunteer checklists relevant to the session you’re on are in the folder on the canteen bench. This will help with what needs to be turned on/off. We unfortunately had the coffee machine left on after closing last Saturday night and it damaged the pressure hoses but will hopefully be back working by this weekend. There are not too many weeks of matches left at Cintra. The next three weekends of canteen roster is as per the below table – team managers have been informed.

WOMEN’S MASTERS STATE CHAMPS
Last weekend saw our more ‘experienced’ women’s players participate in the Masters State Championships spread across Armidale, Tamworth and Wagga Wagga. For most of the players this meant a gruelling weekend containing 6 games in 3 days with many players still recovering and getting ready again for this weekend’s games.
Our biggest representation was in the SEHA 1 team in the over 34s division 1 comp in Armidale with 6 of our ML2 women’s team members making up the team of 12. The team played 5 of 6 games with no subs due to our very own Laura Anggadi (aka Bangers) taking a ball to the face resulting in a nose fracture. The team ended up finishing 2nd in the pool, and after winning their semi final on Sunday morning had to face off a young and fresh Newcastle team which consisted of several ex Briars players (and coach Paul Sharp). Despite a close match, our SEHA team went down to Newcastle 2 -1. Congratulations to Annie Hope, Nicola Skinner, Kylie Norris, Julie Prolov, Rachel Borg, Laura Anggadi and coach Cindy Goodridge.
Other Briars players competing in other teams included Kerrie-ann Gudmunson, Nicole Taylor, Kylie Beckhouse, Pam Unsworth and Jess Martyn.
CONGRATULATIONS ladies! A massive effort for all those old legs! 😊

CANTEEN UPDATE
A big shout out to Ange Cauchi, Liz Everitt, Marcus Fung and the U15/U17 parents for navigating the busiest Friday night we’ve had in a while, as well as navigating a new pitch watering system that Council has given us! It was also our busiest Saturday morning in a while with a full Minkey schedule and both U11 teams playing. Thanks to the Minkey parents, U11 Gold parents, Juliette Triccas and Ilsa Knottenbelt for running the canteen and BBQ. Women’s 3rd and 4th grade then managed to keep food and drinks flowing for the remainder of the day! Finally, thanks to Ratty and Mike D for opening up for two rescheduled men’s matches on Sunday.
It will be a huge weekend this weekend, with juniors on Friday night and Saturday morning as well as Sydney Uni Derby Day on Saturday afternoon/evening. It’ll be a great atmosphere and if you’d like to jump in and help on the BBQ or in the canteen, let us know.
We are fast coming to the end of normal rounds of competition before we move into finals. There are not too many weeks of matches left at Cintra. The next three weekends of canteen roster is as per the below table – team managers have been informed.
PLEASE NOTE: Men’s 5th Grade have been added to the roster for Saturday 13th August to help Men’s 1st and 2nd grades as it’s a long day with 6 matches to cover.
NEW CINTRA WATERING SYSTEM
Canada Bay Council have installed a new online water operating system for Cintra. It’s called Fieldmouse and means that the watering system can only be turned on and off via a website login. A user guide has been written, thanks to Marcus Fung, and we are just finalising the generic login and password details that will be in the Volunteer Checklist folder in the canteen. We realise this has been a frustrating transition but hopefully this will allow better control over the watering system going forward.

CANTEEN UPDATE
Thanks to Slash and the U15A and U17A parents for keeping the canteen humming on Friday night. With no juniors on Saturday morning, a big shout out to the Women’s Social 1 team and Men’s 3rd grade for managing a huge Briars men’s home day on Saturday! Judging by the depletion of beverages and food, it was a great day! Wal powered through another big day of women’s matches on Sunday, starting at 8am and finishing at 8pm.
We have introduced some new items in the canteen. Look out for Vege Pasties, M&Ms and tubs of Wasabi Peas.

CANTEEN UPDATE
Canteen activity has started to ramp back up at Cintra as we come out of school holidays. Thanks to Men’s 5th and 6th grade for covering the canteen roster on Saturday, in particular Slash and Vicky! Wal smashed it on Sunday with an almost 13 hour day – he’s a machine!
This week sees the return of Juniors matches, although only 2 games scheduled for this Friday night. The canteen will be well stocked with Pie Tin pies and there’ll be a few new items to enjoy.
A final reminder that this is the last week the Lost Property tubs will be out in the Clubhouse. By the end of Sunday, anything left will be donated to charity.
We had a few more responses to the canteen survey which was great. We’ll be adding some of the suggested items this week by introducing Vegetable Pasties (more vegetarian options), M&Ms, and from next week, tubs of Wasabi Peas. Thanks to those members who’ve already responded to the canteen survey. There has already been some valuable feedback. Here are some of the suggestions that were made along with our initial responses:
- WOULD LIKE TO SEE ADDED: vegetarian options, more Pie Tin pies!, hot chips, M&Ms – whilst a few of these are easy to add, Hot Chips have been tried in the past and do pose a bit of a safety risk with hot oil, needing close attention and some volunteers not feeling confident to operate the required
- WOULD LIKE TO SEE REMOVED: some of the high GI lollies – love the sentiment, especially for the kids, but they are all very popular, even with the adults
- WHAT CAN BE IMPROVED: more people with RSAs; Briars Merch for sale; instructions for the Pies and the coffee machine; increase prices – love the idea of Briars Merch so will talk to the Committee about what we can do in that space; would love more club members with an RSA and the Club will reimburse anyone the cost of getting one so just let Kylie Norris know if you are interested; instructions for the Pies are in the volunteer checklist guide on the counter in the canteen but instructions for the coffee machine will be looked into
- HOW CAN WE MAKE IT EASIER FOR VOLUNTEERS: Pay someone with an RSA and increase prices to cover; offer a canteen waiver for those who don’t want to do canteen duty; more people should get involved in canteen duty to experience working side by side with some great people – some views at the opposite end of the spectrum. Trying to administer waivers is difficult and takes more volunteer time. Our Briars culture is to support and contribute and canteen duty is minimal over the course of the season. We make a considerable profit from our canteen which keeps fees down and allows us to provide financial support in a range of ways. If you really don’t want to do canteen duty, then offer financial support to your teammates to fill your spot
The canteen roster for the next 3 weekends is as per below – team managers have been informed.

JUNIORS UPDATE – U11s SEHA REPS
15 of our wonderful U11s took on the Tamworth carnival representing SEHA a couple of weeks ago. Here is a report from David Ratcliffe:
Although Sydney faced a rain bomb last weekend the weather luckily stayed away long enough to allow our young Briars U11s Boys and Girls to represent SEHA at the Tamworth under 11s tournament.
The SEHA U11s Boys team went through the whole tournament undefeated and finished 1st in their division. The SEHA 11s Girls finished strong, winning their last two games convincingly. It was really great to see the constant development, smiles and positive attitude shown by this team throughout the entire tournament.
For some of these young players this was their first experience at representative hockey, and they not only did Briars and SEHA proud but themselves as well. It was great seeing these young up and coming Briars really break out this weekend with a lot of learning under their belts, lots of laughs and smiles, new friendships made and some great hockey being played both outdoors and indoors.
Fingers crossed this is just the first of many of these opportunities for our Briars young guns.
Well done all round Under 11s!
U11s Boys:
Archer Shaw, Connor Charlton, Sidharth Kale, Charlie Broadbent & Joshua Ratcliffe, Oliver Heathcote.
U11s Girls:
Ella Murphy, Ella Whitehall, Brooklyn Turnbull, Clancy Norris, Erin Parmenter, Makenna Turnbull, Rosie Fung, Charlotte Heathcote, Elyse Carmichael.
JUNIORS UPDATE – U13s GIRLS SEHA REPS
