The Briars Old Boys Lunch

Briars Sports proudly welcomed more than 15 Briars Old Boys for a special lunch, filled with friendship, laughter, and fond memories.

The group spent the afternoon reminiscing about the good old days when they were a little faster, a little fitter, and proudly represented Briars on the squash courts and rugby fields. Stories of memorable matches, sporting achievements, and lifelong camaraderie were shared, highlighting the strong bonds and rich history that continues to unite the Briars community.

Recently we lost two long-standing and much-valued Old Boys.

The first was Angus “Gus” Shaw, who passed away at the age of 85. Gus played rugby for Briars during the early 1960s and was a close friend of John McNicol and Ray Pontifex. A talented centre, his rugby career was unfortunately cut short after he was struck by a car and suffered a badly broken leg.

An agronomist by profession, Gus spent much of his life in the country and retained a lifelong passion for rugby. Those who knew him will remember his warmth, friendship and enthusiasm for the game.

We also farewell Kevin Holley, who passed away at the age of 83. Kevin joined Briars in 1958 and quickly established himself as a talented left-handed opening bowler with a fierce determination to succeed. His ability soon earned him a place in the Grade A Shires team, where he played alongside the likes of David Walker, Barry Cardwell, Peter Richardson and Peter Mansford.

Kevin’s sporting involvement extended beyond cricket, as he also represented the club in both hockey and squash. One of his greatest joys was watching his sons, Darren and Jason, follow in his footsteps, playing for Briars and sharing in premiership success.

Both Gus and Kevin made significant contributions to the Briars community and will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing them. Their friendship, commitment and passion for sport leave a lasting legacy at the club.

They will be sadly missed.
