Display Match – Greg Lobban v Patrick Rooney
On the 18th of July, the Briars Squash club was treated to a fantastic display of the worlds best with Greg Lobban Australias Olympic hope Current world ranking #28 and highest WR #16 played against England’s Patrick Rooney Current WR#40 Highest WR #18.
With a junior clinic kicking off the day, followed by the adults getting put through their paces we saw the true speed and power of what top-20-in-the-world players can do.
After the clnics we played a 1 point challenge tournament where the clinic participants goto battle out 1 point witht he winner progressing. We saw young Ahan Bhat take out the signed shirt from Greg Lobban.
A brutal 5 set match gave the crowd something rarely seen in Australia due to players needing to be in the northern hemisphere for paid leagues and majority of tournaments. Greg Lobban snuck in the 5th game for the win.
We then enjoyed a delicious meal cooked for us at the club from our partner Hayashi Teppanyaki whilst the juniors got autographs and we got to just talk to the pro’s. Great to see such humble and pleasant athletes taking the time to speak tot he members and answer questions.
Squash NSW State Championship
Junior players from Briars @ Thornleigh Squash and Fitness delivered outstanding results at the Squash NSW State Championships in Bega, securing four podium finishes. Congratulations to Kasper, the Under 19 State Champion, and Naveen, the Under 15 State Champion. Kasper now heads to Canada as Australia’s No. 1 player for the World Junior Championships. Congratulations also to Kasper, Karissa, Naveen, Samiya, Kaira, Kieran and Ahan on their selection for the NSW State Team, a fantastic achievement for the players, coaches and club!
