Jodi McKay MP New Patron of Women’s Rugby

The Member for Strathfield Jodi McKay MP has joined forces with Briars Sports to become the inaugural patron of their Women’s Rugby 7s team.
 As the Member for Strathfield Ms McKay has a passion for encouraging women to be involved in their community.
“I am thrilled to be part of a club that actively supports and celebrates the contribution of women in sport” said Ms McKay. “It’s refreshing for women in our local community to have a different option to traditional sports.”
As Patron for Briars Women’s Rugby 7s Ms McKay will be supporting local women to have a go and get outside their comfort zone.
Women’s Rugby 7s is the fastest growing sport in the world and is also growing fast in Sydney’s Inner West.
The Briars Women’s side began with four players and now five months later have a squad of 25, training every week and playing tournaments and friendly matches all over Sydney. Women from 16 years to 37 years have been building their technical skills, learning to tackle, lineout, scrum, pass, improve their fitness and most of all making new friends along the way.
On Saturday 22 September, the team was invited to play in the opening match against the Manly Mermaids, ahead of an Invictus Games Exhibition Match between Manly Marlins and the Royal Australian Navy Rugby Union teams at Brookvale Oval.
“Each week we are focused on developing our team, our skills and our players. Win or lose it’s important to take lessons from each match so working with local teams like Manly, Cronulla and Hunters Hill is a huge benefit to all of us. It has been fantastic to promote women and be taken seriously. We are really thankful for opportunities like opening for the Invictus Games Exhibition match.” said Jess Post, Team Captain.
The team will now participate in a series of tournaments across regional NSW from October to February 2019.

Ladies Day at Rothwell

Rothwell was a festive PINK for LADIES DAY with the Briars rugby team showing off their pink socks in recognition of raising much needed funds for breast cancer. The famous Briars burgers were sizzling on the BBQ and the champagne was flowing from the ladies marque, accompanied by sweet treats to keep up the energy for the day.

It was a day where the mum’s could relax and watch rugby while the kids enjoyed running around, jumping on the jumping castle and refining their rugby tackling skills.

Briars Women’s Rugby 7s is here!

As the fastest growing sport in the world, Briars has been training an ever growing team for the sport of Women’s Rugby 7s. This team made history on Sunday 27th May 2018 by taking the field as the first Briars Women’s Rugby team, 100 years since the club was formed.

The team were enthusiastic, only learning to tackle a week prior and made their mark in the Sydney 7s competition which plays every month. Briars took on 2 other new teams in Hunters Hill and Nth Cronulla Sea Lice. A big thanks to Jess Post as an experienced player in the team scoring the first ever try for Briars Women’s! Good luck also in the NRL Women’s Talent ID this week!

Briars have welcomed back former club coach and experienced Women’s 7s coach Brad Sculley to coach the team from the ground up. He has done an amazing job to swap netball passes into rugby passes in only 2 weeks!
