Congratulations to Rosie Ryan & Anna Chan for their contributions to Briars Netball!
This award has had a name change from last year, to recognise the encouragement and support that Bindi has given to BNC as a volunteer herself, as well as her desire to have an award established to acknowledge the young people of our community in a special way.
This year the award recipient is a young person who umpired, coaches and played for Briars Netball. She also volunteered her time on Friday nights assisting with NetSetGo. She is a positive influence on the team she plays with and always has encouraging words for younger players.
Congratulations Anna Chan.
Briars Netball WIN 5 Premierships!
2023 has been another year of growth and success for Briars Netball Club. Many who attended Briars on Friday nights in Term 2 would have seen the busy Backyard Restaurant and netball court areas as our youngest NetSetGo players developed their skills over 10 weeks. We had Swifts, Giants and Australian Diamonds players working alongside our own young volunteer coaches as they took the children through their skills and drills.
This year we introduced a mindset coach to our coaches, to help them develop their own tools to continue to create positive, fun and inclusive netball for the players and supporters. We thank ex-Olympic and World Champion Rower Bronwen Downie for the informative session she held with us. We introduced a coaching development team who helped work with our newer coaches, assisting with drills, advice and game play. This proved a worthwhile team that we will continue to develop. Our umpires excelled again in 2023 with our umpiring committee grading a number of new umpires, ensuring skill development and appropriate challenges. We had a beautiful letter of recognition of the professionalism of our umpires.
Our 2023 winter season was our first uninterrupted season in 3 years! The sun shone down on our 5 modified (u8 and u9) teams who joined our 36 competition teams at Cintra on Saturdays between April and September. We were expecting the usual slump of success in 2023 as teams moved up divisions after many grand finalists in our 10th year in 2022. But in true Briars spirit, with integrity and respect, teamwork, fun and enjoyment, inclusion and excellent our teams performed above expectations. On the way to the Grand Finals we had 4 teams go straight through, with 11 more compete in the preliminary final and of those 6 played in the semi-finals. 7 teams in total made the Grand Finals – u10/1 Roses, u12/1 Daffodils, u 10/3 Bluebells, u 11/1 Snapdragons, u13/1 Marigolds, u15/1 Gemstones and Cadet 6 Larimars. All 5 of our graded division 1 teams made the grand finals, which demonstrates that the grading system implemented in 2022 is working very well.
I am please to announce that the following teams were premiership winners.
- u10/1 Roses (minor and major) premiers
- u10/3 Bluebells (major) premiers
- u13/1 Marigolds (minor and major) premiers
- u15/1 Gemstones (minor and major) premiers
- Cadet 6 Larimars (minor and major) premiers
