Briars Hockey Presentation Night

Briars Hockey celebrated their presentation night at Briars Sports this past weekend. Congratulations to all the players who received awards, as well as those who have reached the milestone of over 100 games for Briars Hockey—what an incredible achievement! We look forward to seeing everyone back for the 2025 season.

Awards Presented on the night
  • The introduction of David Cameron Memorial Award:  The award is given to an Under 18’s player who exemplifies respect and kindness toward their teammates. This player consistently upholds the spirit of the game, playing with fairness, honesty, and always putting the support of their teammates first.
Awarded to: Luke Dunn
  • RD Vanderfield Trophy: (Junior Clubperson of the Year): The Junior Club Person of the Year trophy is named in honor of DOUG (R.D.) VANDERFIELD, a distinguished WWII fighter pilot and squadron leader. Doug was a passionate sportsman, playing multiple sports at Briars, with a particular love for Rugby. He also founded Briars Squash and the Briars Ski Club and served as the club’s president for many years. His strong values and dedication were instrumental in shaping the Briars club as we know it today. This award is presented to a junior player who is not only a valuable team member but also exemplifies good sportsmanship on the field and contributes to the club beyond just playing hockey.
Awarded to: CJ Holden
  • Col ‘Hockey’ Jones Medallions: Colin Jones was a member of Briars for over 70 years. Col was renowned for his exceptional skills in hockey and cricket, he earned the AJ Robinson Shield and served as Vice President at Briars Sporting Club. His presence as a player and a friend was greatly cherished and respected. This award is awarded to up to 4 people each year who have gone over and above in volunteering across all aspect of the club.

  • AJ Robinson Trophy (Club Person of the Year): This trophy is the most prestigious club trophy. This award is given to a Briar who exemplifies true club spirit both on and off the field, consistently going above and beyond to ensure the smooth running of the hockey club throughout the year.

Briars Hockey – Player achievements

MASTERS NATIONAL CHAMPIONS: Congratulations to Bryan Wilson and Brad Goodridge who came away with a Gold Medal last week at the Men’s Masters National Championship for the 50s category.

2025 TRANS TASMAN CHALLENGE SQUAD: A massive congratulations to Kat Chua, Karena Gilroy, Rhian Magrath, Annie Hope who have gained selection into the 2025 Hockey Australia Women’s Masters Trans Tasman Challenge Squad! Congratulations ladies! We are so proud!

2024 NATIONAL FUTURES SQUAD: Congratulations to Oskar Smith on his respective selection into the 2024 Futures Talent Squad! This is Oskars second consecutive selection into the futures program and these athletes are earmarked as potential athletes for the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games

Briars Hockey Ladies Day

Don’t miss out! Join Briars Hockey for their Ladies Day on Sunday, 16th June from 9am – 7pm.

BRIARS WOMENS teams & Squads 2024

It has been great to see strong numbers at all the training sessions and trials this year. We have 6 strong womens teams that will be taking the pitch this season and are looking forward to some great results.

Womens training times:

  • Monday 7.30 to 9pm  1st and 2nd grade
  • Thursday 6.30to 8pm  3rd, 4th, SEHA and 6th grade
  • Thursday 8 to 9.30pm  1st and 2nd grade

We would like to announce the teams/squads for the 2024 Briars Womens Hockey season and give you a friendly reminder that all players MUST be registered by the 18th March to maintain their spot in a team.

U16 NSW Selections

Congratulations to our briars trio who gained selection into the NSW U16 Boys and Girls State Teams today! These three will head to Hobart at the start of April to compete for Hockey NSW.

Over the past few months, these athletes have been putting in maximum effort to improve their skills, fitness and game development! This past weekend saw the final selection camp where they trained in 35°+ heat and put their best foot forward to solidify their spots.

Congratulations also to Al pal who has been appointed the head coach role for the boys state team.

Registration is now open for the 2024 hockey season. Be sure to use your active kids voucher if you are registering your child.

Briars Hockey Pre-Season starts on Saturday, 13th January 2024

Happy New year to all our Briars Hockey players, friends and family.

We have our pre-season starting in 2 weeks with gym sessions on Saturdays and fitness and skills on Monday nights as per below. Pre-season is open to all senior players, noting if you intend to play 1st or 2nd Grade men’s or Women’s it is expected you will attend all pre-season.

Our Gym sessions start on the 13th January at combined Air Concord (above Concord Coles) and you need to book in on the link below for a spot at the gym.

Cintra fitness and pre-Season starts on 15th January 7.30pm to 9.30pm at Cintra
