About the Foundation
The Briars Foundation Limited was formed in 1994, by a group of generous members who realised the benefit to the club of building cash reserves for the future development of the club, and to foster the growth of amateur sports in the Burwood / Concord districts. Centenary_Newsletter_April_2017.pdf
The objects of The Briars Foundation are to:
- Raise money and provide financial support for amateur sport.
- Invest such money as The Foundation, in its absolute discretion, sees fit; and
- Apply such money for the support and encouragement of amateur sport in such manner as The Foundation, in its absolute discretion sees fit.
The Briars Sporting Club is now in its 93rd year, we have more sporting members actively playing sport than at any other time in our history. Today, at Briars at Greenlees we have over 1500 members with over 500 of those representing the club in rugby, cricket, men’s and women’s hockey, men’s and women’s bowls, squash and netball.
In addition we have a strong junior development programme with teams in junior cricket and hockey competitions, and a development programme in rugby for young boys from Concord and surrounding suburbs.
In its ability to provide financial support for this multi-faceted club of ours, The Foundation has never been more relevant than it is today.
What the Foundation has achieved
Our largest project to date has been the construction of the international standard hockey field at Cintra, Concord.
This was made possible by the Foundation’s ability to provide capital funds of $100,000.
This independent source of funds would have been beyond the budget and financial capacity of The Briars Club or of its hockey members.
The superb standard of this facility is one of the major reasons why the club has attracted players of international standard, and why Briars Hockey has risen to the highest level in the state, and why it is the fastest growing sport in the club.
The playing surface was refurbished in December 2006 again with the Foundation’s support.
The Foundation has also recently funded an upgrade of the cricket practice wickets adjacent to Concord High School, and provided some $60,000 to erect night lighting for rugby training at Greenlees Park.
Memorabilia cabinets were installed at the Club in 2010 and allows for the history, culture and tradition to be preserved at a cost of $27,000
Future Projects
A much needed up-grade of the pavilion and change rooms at Rothwell Park, which will be linked to a long-term lease for the benefit of cricket and rugby.
